What is Scoliosis?

The spine is the protective covering of your central nervous system - the control system of the entire body. As you can imagine, interference to the central nervous system can have significant consequences on your health.

The spine is composed of 24 vertebrae that should curve anterior to posterior (front to back) in the three major regions of the spinal column - Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar. A scoliosis is any lateral curvature of the spine (left to right).

While some curvatures can be minor - resulting in posture changes or tight muscles - others can be severe enough to compress nerves, impair organ function and even prevent you from walking on your own.

How does Scoliosis Happen?

There are two common ways that a scoliosis can develop.

  1. Structural - structural scoliosis typically develops after a fracture of a vertebrae or an abnormal development of the shape of a vertebrae - likely at birth - that causes the bones around it to develop an abnormal curve.
  2. Functional - this type of scoliosis can develop from poor posture, muscle imbalances or joint misalignments.

Can I live a normal life with scoliosis?

Depending on the severity of scoliosis most people with the help of a chiropractor, physical therapist or orthopedic doctor can live a normal life. Some may not realize they even have scoliosis.

Does scoliosis get worse with age?

It can. If unchecked, a scoliosis can lead to bone weakening, degenerative joint disease, arthritis and even more severe complications like organ dysfunction and nerve impingement.

To know the correct way to manage your scoliosis it is imperative to see a specialist like a chiropractor to properly evaluate your spine before starting any type of rehab or therapies.

What worsens scoliosis?

The progression of scoliosis varies on an individual basis. Factors such as diet and bone health, posture, daily habits and severity of curvature all play a role in the progression of a musculoskeletal condition like scoliosis.

How can I fix scoliosis naturally?

Most cases of scoliosis can be managed or even reversed with chiropractic adjustments and an individualized exercise and rehabilitation program of stretching and strengthening the muscles around the spine.

3 Proven Methods to Improve a Scoliosis Naturally

#1 Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractors are experts in the mobility and proper alignment of the spine. Adjustments can not only help correct long term issues - they can provide short term relief - some patients report therapeutic relief almost immediately after a properly delivered adjustment.

#2 Exercise Therapy

A properly planned exercise program by a healthcare professional may be the best way to prevent progression and in some cases even reverse the curvature of a scoliosis.  Developing symmetrical muscles around the spine and core is like building a natural brace the bring with you everywhere you go.

#3 Nutrition

You are what you eat! And that goes for your bones too. Sometimes a scoliosis can develop from under-nourished bones. What does this mean? If you are lacking key minerals and nutrients, your bones can become soft and structually weak - this contrubutes to teh degenerative changes we see in a patient with scoliosis.

Here are some of the key minerals and nutrients that help form strong bones:

Vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption and regulation of calcium into your bones.

Vitamin K helps bind calcium to the inner structure of bones. This is why it is common to see Vitamin K and Vitamin D sold together in supplement form.

Magnesium works with vitamin D for optimal use, this is a mineral that is highly concetrated in bones.

Phosphorus helps form the structure of bones.

It is important to remember - while these are all naturally occuring substances - the type, quality and dosage are all factors that can effect your health for better and for worse - so talk to a healthcare professional to formulate a supplement plan specific to your needs.

What is the best treatment for scoliosis?

This depends entirely on the nature and severity of the condition. When surgery is not the only option some patients will find the best therapy is a combination of chiropractic, exercise therapy and nutritional support.

The first step is a proper evaluation to determine your next steps.
